Distances and Size of Palestine

by Richard W. LaFountain

Perspective is everything.

We don't often note that Jesus travelled on foot just about everywhere he went. In fact, there is only one occasion mentioned in which Jesus took another mode of transportation other than by foot or by boat. Do you remember what it was?

When reading the Bible we often miss the point when we fail to see how long it must have taken Jesus and his disciples to get from one place to another. Take the Road to Emmaus story after the resurrection. Do you have any idea how far the disciples travelled on foot as Jesus approached and walked with them? It was eight miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Now note that the disciples entered a home to rest for the night and it was there that Jesus revealed himself, then disappeared. The disciples travelled back to Jerusalem that same night!

Have you walked 8 miles recently? How long do you think it would take you to walk 8 miles? Can you mark on your local map some town or neighborhood that is exactly 8 miles away? Ok, now walk that distance reviewing the story of Jesus appearance on the Road to Emmaus. Use the time to discuss with a friend or meditate on the prophecies concerning Jesus as he did. How many can you remember without using your Bible? How many can you quote?

Are you getting the picture? The disciple and Jesus spent huge amounts of time together, not primarily in the recorded events of his life, but in the in-between-times, walking from one place to another.

This lesson is to teach your distances and sizes of the topography of Palestine. It will require a good deal of personal time pouring over the maps of Israel getting familiar with the terrain.

ASSIGNMENT FOR CREDIT STUDENTS

Using the map of Palestine as your guide, make a overlay map of your local area of the country. (I used Western Pennsylvania.) Find locations at exact distances from your Jerusalem, that is from your hometown. Use that map to teach others the size implications of Palestine. You will find it tremendously helpful.

Now try walking or even biking those distances! Hmmm... It gives the Scriptures a new perspective doesn't it!?

Have you ever climbed a mountain? How high is the highest peak you have climbed? What are some of the mountains that Jesus would have climbed? Take an afternoon (or all day) and climb one as Jesus did.

Have you ever sailed in a sail boat on a lake about the size of the Sea of Galilee? Try it. Rent a row boat or sail boat and go for a ride about the length of crossing the Sea of Galilee.
