Scythopolis (not mentioned in Gospels)
The Hebrew means "house of quiet." At first Beth-shan was allied with the
Philistines (Josh.17v16). However, it later became a fortified city of the
territory of the tribe of Manasseh (Josh.17v11; Judg.1v27). It was 14 miles
south of Lake Galilee, located in the Valley of Jezreel (which see). It dates
all the way back to 3500 B.C. After the death of King Saul, the Philistines
attached his corpse to the wall of Beth-shan (1Sam.31v8-12; 2Sam.21v12). King
Solomon in- cluded this town as one of his commissary districts
(1Kgs.4v12).
