Capernaum |
Lesson 11: by Richard W. LaFountain
The scene of the Year of Popularity Jesus' ministry is located in the
neighboring town of Capernaum, on the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
There are 10 steps:
DRAW A CIRCLE AROUND THE WORD CAPERNAUM IN MATTHEW 4:13.
In Matthew 4:12-13 we learn that Capernaum was in the province of Galilee
and on the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim. This is
important in that it fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah 9:1-2. (Locate these
names on a detailed map of Palestine.)
There is much more detail given to the accounts in the Year Of Popularity
than given in other years. Matthew 4:12-25 gives a good survey of that year
of ministry.
The city of Capernaum was a large city in contrast to Nazareth, and was
therefore the perfect center for a growing ministry. it was situated on the
SEA OF GALILEE, also known as the sea of Tiberias. (WHY? Who was Tiberias
see Luke 3:1) There is another lake mentioned in this region in Luke 5:1
called the Lake of Gennesaret.
WHERE WAS IT LOCATED?
EXTRA CREDIT: Research the area of Caperaum and towns surrounding the Sea
of Galilee. Also search for any interesting tidbits of information that
might be helpful to understanding the area.
HINT: What archeological digs are in the area and what have they found.
The story of Jesus' life divides into five stages.
