The Old Church and Cemetery
On the NY State Thruway (Interstate 287/87) cross the Hudson River by way of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Take
the first exit after the toll and go north on Route 9. It will take you a short distance through the
town of Tarrytown. About half way through the town you will come to a split in the road where
an old church and cemetery stands. Take the right fork and you will be able to park behind the old
cemetary and enter from the rear.
This church and cemetery were familiar territory to the Belyea family between 1697 and 1783 - Lewis, Jan,
Hendrick, and Abraham all worshipped here and dedicated their children to God as recorded in the church
register.
Just a short distance from the church, north again on Route 9, you will find on the left side of
the road a visitor center for the Old Philipsburg Manor. Park in the parking lot and enter the
gift shop to buy a ticket for the tour. You will be glad you did.
This is the restored homestead
of the Philipsburg Estate. The main house is where our ancestors arrived to pay their rent each year.
What a thrill it was to me to walk through the low doorways and tiny rooms of the house and to hear
that "Where you are standing is the exact spot where each tenant stood to pay his rent each year as
Mr. Philpse recorded the transaction at this very same desk."
