ASCII (pronounced ASK-EE) art is an art form that developed with the computer. In the early days, of necessity, ASCII art was the only art and graphics available when all computers were monochrome and text only. With the limited array of 26 characters, assorted numbers and explanitory marks the human creative mind set about to devise a way to acheive artistic replication of the world around us. It is amazing what can be done so artistically with so little. Our praise and thanks to the hundreds, if not thousands, of nameless text artists who are the authors of this modern computer graffiti scribbled on the walls of time. Even now when graphics has come of age there are those of us who love ASCII art for its shere cleverness and ingenuity. Many cybernauts have adopted their favorite ASCII art to use as part of their signature on their e-mail messages, thereby extending the life of this wonderful art form, while inventing a actual practical use for this endangered artform.
